Anzali Wetland Conservation Study

The Anzali Wetland is a beautiful wetland located on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea in Iran. It is internationally known as an important wetland for migratory birds and was registered as a Ramsar site in June 1975. However, the water quality of the wetland is deteriorating due to inflow of wastewater and solid waste from surrounding cities and pollution loads from farming. The inflow of sediment from the mountain areas as a result of deforestation and overgrazing is also a concern.
In order to restore the environmental conditions of the wetland, the Governments of Japan and Iran decided to carry out a joint study with technical assistance from Japan funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
